Our policy choices as a country must reflect both the influence of
the global environment and the potential international impact of Canadian
actions. To achieve our full potential within the international community,
we must maintain our leadership in extending the benefits of trade and
investment liberalization to developing countries and our proud tradition
of internationalism in contributing to global peace and security and
to the spread of democratic institutions and values.
The Council has been a strong supporter of the Doha Development Agenda
of the World Trade Organization, and of regional initiatives such as
APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation).
In addition, the Council has played key roles in the launch of bilateral
initiatives with significant trading partners. In Asia, the Council
has led CEO missions to China and to India. It produced a joint study
with Nippon Keidanren in 2006 recommending broader and deeper economic
cooperation with Japan. In 2008, it co-authored a study with the Confederation
of Indian Industry calling for launch of negotiations on a comprehensive
bilateral free trade agreement. And it worked successfully with its
business counterparts in Europe to set the stage for a broad partnership
agreement between Canada and the European Union, with formal negotiations
expected to be launched in the Spring of 2009.
